I've uploaded the same type audio file before and it worked fine, but this time when I get to the "item detail page" I'm only getting video and text options for media type. No audio option.
Could it be that this new file is too big? That's the only difference I can guess at.

nb. for users of the CC-Publisher application, if you're hitting an error after uploading at present, it's due to the problem with audio categories. Archive.org are aware of it and are onto it, but in the meantime, you can still submit audio this way:

Upload it as usual, with just your audio files, but call it a "text" collection rather than audio.

When everything's finished, go to your newly-uploaded item and click "Item Manager". Then click "Checkout" and edit the item directly via FTP.
Download the meta.xml file and open it in notepad (or similar). Change "opensource_text" to "opensource_audio" and "Text" to "Audio" in the two tags near the top of the file ({collection} and {mediatype}).

Save the file and then FTP-upload it to your item's directory.

It will now display correctly as open-source audio.

Hi, I'm sure the system will be fixed in no time at all. The apparent "new categories" of audio are in fact just the existing artists at the start of the alphabet.
There IS a fix in the meantime, which is why I'm posting rather than just waiting..... if anyone's in a real hurry to set their media-type to audio, you can indeed do it via the "Item Manager" - tell it you want to "check out", which triggers the ability to access the files directly via FTP.

If you're still with me, read on! LOL it's very fiddly, but better to have real control than have a user-friendly GUI IMHO.........

the file you're after is the "METADATA" XML file.....
download it to your computer and open it in NOTEPAD....

there may be no tag like this:

audio
opensource_audio

Or it may be set to TEXT, etc. if you've been frustrated by the lack of audio category in the system, etc. etc. etc.

Anyway, change it to the above and it'll be right.

The tag can probably go more or less anywhere, but in 'healthy' files, it seems to sit under "Title".
If there ISN'T a tag then that lives under

Hope this is of some help to some of you. I uploaded my largest collection to date today, well over 400MB of FLAC files, and will be gutted if I have to spend a further 7 hours uploading it..... however it's such a privilege to have this facility that I suppose we have to accept that from time to time there will be glitches - it's probably the biggest thing mankind has ever tried to manage, so it's quite something that it works!!

Thank you once again, Internet Archive staff.

PS. The renderer has altered my previous post because the XML tags were believed to be formatting d'oh!!!

I'll use {} instead of the proper brackets:

{mediatype}audio{/mediatype}
{collection}opensource_audio{/collection}

You need the above two tags in your XML file. If existing ones are there (eg. saying text, opensource) then overwrite them.

Save your file and re-upload it.

Hope it helps, and sorry I posted twice before - not the archive's fault: my fault LOL

Hi,

We are aware of the problem, and we're working on fixing it now.

If anyone has miscategorized items that they need to have put into the correct collections, we'll be happy to help you. Send the URL of your item to iasupport@archive.org letting us know which collection it should be in, and we'll take care of it as quickly as possible.

Thanks for your patience!

Thanks very much indeed. This site is one of the absolute wonders of the modern world. If anyone had told me this site would be possible let alone HAPPEN years ago I'd have said they were too idealistic.
What you're doing is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Quick confirmation: the workaround does indeed work....

http://www.archive.org/details/GregFoxMalhausConstructionKitVersion - uploaded today, collection: open source audio

So there's the answer - edit the XML tags directly by downloading metadata.xml, editing in notepad, then re-uploading to your directory.

It looks like there's been server outage as every FTP session I've had today has been on the same machine, which is unusual to say the least.
If capacity's down to one or two servers then no wonder the problem's not been sorted yet.

Best to wait til Monday in most cases maybe.

It's also happening to my files as well, and they aren't large.

It looks like the page took a hit, and it's not the only one.

The main upload page was filled by various categories,
like this:
1000 vertical ft. | 1981 | 20 Minutes to Park | 2 Skinnee Js | 311 | 35 North | 3ApplesHigh | 37 Including You | 3 Peas | 3 Simple Words | 50 Foot Wave | 56 Hope Road | 5th Pocket | 6gig | 72 Hour Hold | A-Kamp | AJ Roach | ALBINO! | A Silver Mt Zion | Abe Lincoln Story | Abe Reid and the Spikedrivers | Acid Mothers Temple | Acoustic Junction | Acoustic Planet | Acoustic Syndicate | Acoustic Vibration Appreciation Society | Adam Boucher | Adam Brodsky | Addison Groove Project | Adam Stewart | Afroskull | After Disco Died | Aftergrass | Agent Moosehead | Agents of Good Roots | Akashic Record | Al Perry | Al Schnier | Alabaster Brown | Alan Hertz and Friends | Al and the Transamericans | Alec Delphenich | Alex Esther | AlexQ | Alex Skolnick Trio | Ali Baba's Tahini ... More, much more.

I think those names are part of the testing phase for moving the Live Music Archive to the new system. Possibly something went awry with the Audio option during that testing?
